1 General: What does this web site do? Return to top
It aims to enable the full spectrum of statistical techniques to be employed in today's industry - not only manufacturing although that is the principal target. In fact there is much more to be gained by employing statistical techniques in the service industry.

We are well aware of the many excellent procedures such as 6-s, Taguchi etc which contain many statistical tools and include these as well.

24/11/2004 11:30:37

2 General: How much does it cost to use? Return to top
The web facility itself is free to use but there is a full server facility that is Pay-as-you-go. Further details of this may be found under the Statistics Server and Costs sections of these FAQs.

There are corresponding facilities for creators of software to have it installed on the server, maintain and control access and earn an income stream from their product. This can augment the more usual licence model for selling software.

24/11/2004 11:24:18

3 General: Why has it been created? Return to top
The site was created because the vast majority of companies are tiny.  They do not have the critical mass that can justify the employment of statisticians or the immediate use of advanced techniques, even though it would be ultimately highly beneficial.  This site has two main functions - firstly to enable registration of and search for statistical skills for which a comprehensive set of skills, tools, industrial sectors and qualifications are defined to enable a focussed search.  There are also various business tools being developed.

In addition, this system promotes excellence in software and statistical approaches as well as clustered working with the statistician, client technical and other staff, other consultants and data clerks all working together on a common calculational platform accessible via a secure Internet link.

The customer buys only what they need - the consultancy service from the consultant and the software facilities from us - rather than paying for the data cleaning, regular running studies and excessive reporting that the customer won't read anyway.  Note that for commercial software, there may be support payments required by the licence owner that will need to be paid directly - or via our system - to be able to access the software.

Lastly there are value-added parts such as software and document downloads.  There is a separate user/password system to the administration section and individual user accounts on the server also have their own login/password pairs.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

4 General: What is the Statistics Server? Return to top
The Statistics Server is a fully functional Unix system which will include a comprehensive portfolio of statistical software and other tools that the best statistical laboratories use. Access is cross-platform and details may be found on the Connections FAQ page.

A Windows facility being developed for Windows platformed applications in much the same way, although it will be more expensive to use.

29/11/2004 12:19:41

5 General: Where is the web site located? Return to top
The web site is hosted for us in Sheffield.

24/11/2004 11:37:09

6 General: Where is the statistics server located? Return to top
The statistics server is located in Manchester. Manchester is the second UK Internet hub with a strategic 10Gbit LAN to which we are directly connected.  This offers excellent connections for both domestic and international traffic.

24/11/2004 11:39:41

7 General: How are you financed? Return to top
The financing is private.  We are always happy to talk to new investors or sponsors - who may be rewarded by seeing their logos in lights at the top of the web page - and any further sources of finance to help us promote the excellence of statistical approaches.  In fact sponsors can be just happy users - the randomly selected logos at the top of the screen are drawn from those users that have helped or spent significantly with this system. All sponsors can use the system and the more they spend, the more their logos are likely to be selected!

24/11/2004 11:42:17

8 General: This seems a great idea - how can we help? Return to top
All help is very welcome!  Consider authorising your company to sponsor the site.  Please visit our sponsors.  Throw ideas at us - we do not claim to have any monopoly on wisdom!  If you are a webmaster or have access to one, consider putting a link into this site - there is a little Industrial Statistics logo on the left that you are free to copy and add to your site - as long as you link to this site of course.  We will be implementing an affiliate and recommendation scheme that will enable you to earn a little money - or credit on your account - so the good word can be spread.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

9 General: How are you marketing this service? Return to top
By the usual internet techniques plus articles, conference papers, talking to groups etc.  There are three levels of the site and each will have it's own marketing strategy.

While the original target is industry, other client groups are very welcome.  If you want us to come and talk to you let us know.  We will also be implementing a recommendation system and an affiliate marketing scheme, both aimed at server registration.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

10 General: Is this site just aimed at industry? Return to top
Certainly not!  There are similar problems for example in medical statistics where statisticians have by and large moved to university departments, leaving medical staff with little access.

To some extent this is because salaries and status were very low in hospitals - at least in the UK - but also it is because the lone statistician cannot have the career interest and potential that s/he would enjoy in a critical-mass department or institution.  There need for leading-edge collaborative solutions is much the same as in industry.  There are many small medical and bio-science research companies springing up in science parks and the like that cannot afford to employ a full-time statistician directly and may not have access via their local university to a medical statistics department.  Equally they may not be able to afford some of the expensive software that may be required.

Pharmaceuticals is another area - most statisticians in the pharma industry work in the clinical trials area required by the regulatory authorities.  But it is all very well to demonstrate the effectiveness of a research drug - you then have to make it in large quantities within closely prescribed limits for the research results to be valid – that is for the drug to work.  Manufacturing pharmaceutical products has the same problems as making light switches – with the advantage that it is very high value-added.

Other areas of application are education and training where the server facilities may be used for demonstration and practice purposes.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

11 General: Is this system aimed at businesses only? Return to top
Yes, but if individuals want to login and subscribe we don't mind.  However the important criterion is that the Terms and Conditions are specifically business-orientated which means that we assume you know what you are doing and are prepared to waive the usual consumer protections.  These are not really relevant outside the UK anyway.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

12 General: Is this system aimed only at statistics? I can think of other applications. Return to top
We are aware of this - and originally were considering cloning the site for engineering or medical applications, for example.  However the more we thought about it, the more we see the future as enabling any software to be run effectively and securely over the internet.  Thus, for example, software developers can make available, control and earn from their products without having to open their own server to the outside.  Companies can access software required only episodically without having to purchase expensive licences or, possibly more importantly, install, run and maintain both the software and the hardware required.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

13 General: Under what legal system is our contract? Return to top
The legal constraints are those imposed on us by the Laws of England and Wales under which any Terms and Conditions are interpreted.  However with sensible use there is no reason at all for any user from the UK or overseas ever to have to deal with this.  Users are reminded that the UK has very stringent requirements for ISPs and the like to keep a trail of emails for quite a long time (the Reservation of Investigative Powers Act 2000) and we will of course collaborate completely with the authorities in tracing any emails and their contents should it be necessary.  There are clear terms and conditions drawn up to which you have to confirm agreement before level 2 registration can take place and any user violating these terms runs the risk of deletion of their account - and any associated member of a group account - without forewarning.

24/11/2004 00:02:46

14 Web site: I click on the tabs at the top and nothing happens - why? Return to top
If you mouse over the tabs along the top - those just below the sponsors highlighted in yellow - and if you have Javascript enabled (there is really no reason not to have this) then you will see a second row of tabs come up. This design was adopted to save (vertical) space and so that drop-downs aren't left on the screen - which happens with some browsers.

As you move the mouse over the top row, the second row will alter. Those links that are live in the second row show as links - the links you can't use show as yellow text. For example, under Information all the sub-tabs are clickable but under Account (which refers to your account on the web site), only Registration and Classifications are clickable.

You don't click on the top row but the second row.

For some pages, a third row of links appears.

24/11/2004 11:56:40

15 Web site: I give up - how do I register? Return to top
As always, once you know it's easy!  To log in you need a username and a password.  You assign these yourself.  Go to the Account tab at the top and click on Registration.  This will reveal a third row with a New User tab.  (Alternatively, we have provided a Register link on the left - but you presumably haven't seen that!)

Click on this and you will go to a page with a series of tabs at the top.  Please read the Instructions first but if you are really impatient, clicking on New User will take you to a screen that asks for various details.  Don't worry about the other pages yet - you can't access them anyway.

Fill out your details (we are registered with the Information Commissioner so your data is safe and won't be passed on).  The Username needs to be at least 5 characters long, starting with a letter and containing case-sensitive letters, numbers or the symbols dash (""-"") or underscore (""_"").  The maximum length is actually 40 characters which is enough for anyone - bear in mind that the server family name is only 5-10 characters long and the suggestion is to use your username.  The password needs to be between 5 and 15 case-sensitive alpha-numeric characters long.  The site will tell you if you have selected a name already used - eventually we will add a suggested name in such cases.

A contact email address also needs to be given and the country drop-down selected - it should detect where you are but it is not infallible.  We also add your preferred currency, a field for VAT number (this only affects non-UK EU institutions and we will check it) and a 'Search available' check box so you can remove yourself from the search index without having to delete or re-enter your detailts - you can change this whenever you want.

Once you press Submit and your information has been accepted, the site will consider you logged in and some of the page characteristics will change.  To log out, just click on the Logout tab on the top left and you will be logged out.

02/03/2005 13:38:42

16 Web site: What happens then? Return to top
The site will send you a Welcome message which will contain a Verification code.  You don't strictly need to verify the contact email address to log back in at all - this is only needed if you want to purchase facilities, use the server or other functions like joining one of the Forums - but we suggest you verify your email address all the same before you lose the message.

24/11/2004 12:59:44

17 Web site: What do the other tabs on the Instruction page do? Return to top
The next one along is the Criteria.  This enable you to enter characteristics of your skills, general experience and qualifications - in the most general sense.  The next is the Email tab which is where you verify email addresses and generate new email addresses.  You can change your Contact email addresses also or delete all but one email address.  The Forums page takes you to the list of Forums (well Fora for the classicists) - you must subscribe with a verified email address to be able to read the list or post a message - to avoid malicious subscription.  You can elect to receive Forum messages via email - but you cannot submit a message to the Forum via email to avoid spam and viruses or viri if there are still any classicists awake.  Lastly you can enter details of your company, web page, email address etc by clicking the HTML tab.    This enables you to put up to 500 characters of description, including HTML, for potential customers to see.  (There is an ActiveX tab but this is broken.)

03/03/2005 11:33:59

18 Web site: That's a lot of instructions just to register - isn't there an easier way? Return to top
There are a set of quick links on the left hand side - clicking on Register will take you here - that can save some bother and will these change when you log in. It doesn't make any difference which you use - they link to the same pages. We have even put a Help button in now that takes you straight to these FAQs!

24/11/2004 13:08:12

19 Web site: What if I forget my password or even username? Return to top
The first one is easy - just enter your username in the UserName box and press the User/Pwd? Button.  The site will send your password to your verified Contact email address.

If you forget your UserName then enter a verified email address known to us in the User Name box and press User/Pwd?.  This will send your username to you and if you still can't remember your password, you will have to repeat the procedure.  It is obviously a bad idea to send username and password in the same email.

Note that for these procedures to work, your email address(es) need to have been verified.

24/11/2004 13:57:31

20 Web site: What about browsers? Return to top
The only browser with known problems on this site is the rather ancient Netscape 4.xx.  IE is fine and should enable you to use ActiveX when it is fixed to enter your details but we strongly advise you to upgrade to Mozilla Firefox as the browser of choice. &nsbp; No problems have been reported with Galeon , other Gecko-based browsers, Opera or Safari.  You need to enable Javascript and at the moment the site doesn't use cookies.

02/03/2005 13:47:58

21 Web site: Why all the email addresses? Return to top
There are three types of email address used on this site - although you can use the same address for all purposes of course.  These are:
  1. Contact email address - this is the email address that you must use on registration and to which we send the Welcome message and anything else like the username or password should you forget them - it needs to be verified for the password and username reminders to work. This email address is never revealed to the public or available anywhere online.
  2. The Forum email addresses are for Forum messages when you choose to have them also delivered to a mailbox. Again these are never revealed but to protect you from malicious registration you have to verify each such address.
  3. You can also add an email address to your details. This address is available to the public but it is never shown on a page other than the final user details after a search or check has been requested and this can only be done when logged in. This is to reduce the possibility of email (and URL) farming.
Note that you cannot set up identical email addresses for different purposes.  Each time a new email address is entered, it is checked against all addresses currently on file and rejected if you (or another user) has already used it.  Please verify your email addresses - we are registered with the UK Information Commissioner so your data is safe.

03/12/2004 11:55:15

22 Web site: What specialist facilities does the site offer? Return to top
We link to various statistics resources but as far as this site is concerned:
  • There are forums (fora) aimed at various sectors and functions - if you think other forums are required, please let us know although this is no guarantee that we will set them up!
  • There is a registration and search facility with sufficiently broad criteria to be able to cope with a large number of disciplines and applications areas.
  • A specialist bureau service is available first with Unix but eventually a Windows service.
  • We hope also to offer access for approved users to grid computing
Other facilities will come on stream as soon as practicable - Professional Indemnity Insurance, ISO9k or equivalent documentation, verification procedures and standards, UK-specific tax, National Insurance and VAT facilities. Some of these will require a payment to use as they will be value-added services.

We don't aim to add too many country-specific facilities - this begins to be far too complicated legally - but you are always welcome to work via the UK tax system if you like. We are sure that the UK government will be only too happy to take the money ...

03/12/2004 11:57:24

23 Web site: What search categories are available? Return to top
The search categories are shown here. The Skills and Tools categories have 5 levels - None, Basic, Broad, Expert and Guru plus Training if offered; the Industry categories do not have the Training category. The Qualifications are just indicated by a check box.

There are already quite a lot of classifications within each category but if you want to suggest some changes, let us know and we will add them to any revisions. The easiest way to do this is via one of the forums so that a discussion and hopefully consensus will arise.

24/11/2004 14:23:18

24 Web site: Can you define the categories more clearly please? Return to top
We use a 5-point scale merely as an indicator - these are all self-evaluated and at the end of the day it is up to the Client to satisfy themselves that the statistician is competent.  However some guidance is necessary, as one of our Advisors has pointed out.

We start by defining the endpoints.

While all statisticians will know at least a tiny bit about all branches of statistics, there are some areas that they really know very little about.  Thus for example someone who is expert or better in classical analysis of variance or probability theory may know next to nothing about neural networks or web mining.  This latter is the None category - the statistician would not really know where to start although s/he may suggest an alternative technique.

On the other hand, there are those people who are global experts and to whose lectures we would all rush if we had the time and the air fare.  These are Gurus.

We wouldn't expect too many None's or too many Guru's on the data base.

Between them, there are Basic, Broad and Expert categories.  Basic knowledge means knowing sufficient to solve the problem perhaps after a little research, Broad knowledge means the the problem can be solved and put into context with little research and Expert knowledge means the problem can be solved rapidly and comprehensively without recourse to research except perhaps re-reading an article or two.

This might not seem sufficient resolution but in practice, to many industrial clients, even a Basic knowledge will be a bonus - how much of the time are you really just using high school maths?  The solution offered by someone with Basic knowledge - even though they may have to spend some time thinking - may be just as good as an Expert solution, particularly if they have Broad of Expert knowledge of the underlying processes.

You can enter or change your self-classification at any time so if, after reading this, you think you have not represented yourself fully or promoted yourself too much, you can revisit your details at any time.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

25 Web site: Why do you use this long-winded search approach? Return to top
We decided against a conventional keyword driven search engine because this really depends on how good the user is in defining their keywords.  An HtDig or Google type of approach would require the statistician to upload documents that may be confidential.  We therefore concluded that a top-down approach was necessary.

The classifications were the result of a degree of thinking, analysis and asking people for their ideas.  In the end, they can easily be extended but this approach has the benefit of making you think - whether you are a statistician or potential client.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

26 Web site: How does the search engine work? Return to top
The search engine adds up all the matches between what the Client wants and what all the statisticians or trainers can offer, giving higher scores to the higher skills.  This means that the better the match, the higher the score.  However as the classification is open to the abuse that someone can claim to be a Guru at everything - thus ensuring they are always at the top of every search - some randomisation is applied.   Full details, including skill and experience profile, may be seen by clicking on a target username so you may decide.   We also enable you to restrict the search to people or institutions based in various world regions - EU, North America etc - and in or not in a particular country.  We will be adding further regions over time and also enabling search of countries not in a particular region.

02/03/2005 13:52:36

27 Software: What software is available on the server? Return to top
There is a list of this elsewhere on this site. In the early stages, this will not be very extensive but it will grow. We are setting up a Product Management area on the web site soon and this will enable software owners to authorise individual users to access their product on the server and at what price, as well as enabling us to control access to other facilities.

24/11/2004 14:41:55

28 Software: What about licencing? Return to top
We make clear to every supplier of software that we are running as a bureau service and the licences must reflect the potentially commercial work that is done and that the user will be a third party.  If a supplier cannot modify their licence to suit this we will not mount the software but there is a lot of open source software available, some of which is very good indeed even if it lacks features.

24/11/2004 14:32:31

29 Software: I have a program that may be of interest.  How can I mount it? Return to top
If it is for your use only - or for the use of a group under your family - then you are free to install it.  You will find most compilers available as long as you have a sufficient trust level.  If you need access to certain parts of the system that are normally available but locked off on our installation, we will have to do it for you.  If you want to make it available to other people outside your groups then you can post a message on our User's Forum.  We will also have to set up an administration user and role up so that users outside your individual group or family can access it.  There will in this case be an initial and annual charge for such a service which will depend on you and the program.  Contact us for details.

24/11/2004 14:40:21

30 Software: My program is not GPL or equivalent.  Is there any way I can earn money from it? Return to top
There are four types of charging mechanisms and two methods of charging for support if that is necessary. Any of these may be suitable. More details can be found here about having software installed - or even installing it yourself - on this system and earning money from it.

Some of these approaches have been developed specifically for the larger software producers but there is no reason why a small software company cannot use them. As with all software, as long as it runs natively on the operating system (Linux - although we will be offering a similar Windows-based facility), you can generate an income stream from it but if it is an add-in, then the better way will be to buy it and install it on your own system. This is particularly true for Excel add-ins as there is no way of accounting for use. We can always help by enabling the software to be downloaded and using our credit card system for payment - although we will of course have to make a small charge for this service. In both cases, the Product Management Area will enable a lot of control of the product. This requires a different user to be set up to administer products.

14/06/2005 10:18:56

31 Software: How do I manage my software used by other users? Return to top
The Product Management Area is the third part of this web site. If you have software mounted on the server for other people to use, we will have enabled your web user to access the Management Area. This will enable you (a) to set up the basic cost parameters for your software, (b) enable users who request access and (c) view the most recent consumption figures.

05/05/2005 13:32:11

32 Software: Do I have to have a server account in order to be able to manage software? Return to top
No, although we do suggest you do. The Server Administration Area and the Product Management Area are separate parts of this web site each controlled by it's own password which need not be the same, although both must be different to the main login password.

We will make a management account on the server available to you to handle the software itself but you will not be able to access anything else. In order to see how your software works in a user environment, you will need to have an ordinary server account, which you can access from here.

02/01/2007 21:31:35

33 Software: Do you sell software on commission? Return to top
We are always happy to help with the marketing of software that we have installed - and any other software such as Excel addins that are not appropriate in this environment.  We view our system as a way for people to try different types of software without having to install it themselves.

While we aim to be as inexpensive as possible, if you want for example interactive graphics there is no way that we can offer seriously fast response because of latency.  Therefore potential customers can try out the system, even co-develop on our server, then install the software on their own computer.

We could make it available for download and take a small commission, using our payment facilities and this means that you wouldn't need to take credit cards or have a merchant account.  Email us for details.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

34 Software: How do we get paid? Return to top
Payments would either be forwarded to you on a monthly basis or, if you have an account, they can be credited to you account in terms of current units for you to consume.  In this latter case, of course, it would not be possible to draw the sales as money.  The payment mechanism will be agreed between us but we can credit most types of accounts.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

35 Software: You haven't got program XYZ mounted - why? Return to top
There can be a number of reasons for this:
  1. It may not be available on our platform.
  2. There may be technical reasons why we can't mount it - for example the memory use may be non-standard and this may pose a security risk (although we could sandbox the program).
  3. We may not know about it or have not thought about it so just drop us a line and we will see what the costs are - there are so many excellent software packages around.
  4. The licence conditions may not allow us to mount it on a publicly available server so if you really need it, just pester their sales folk!
  5. The costs may too high - some software is very expensive. In this case you may be able to share this with other users (put a message on the appropriate mailing list to look for sharers) and we can arrange to distribute the cost between you. It is also possible to set up a support payment system either directly with the software manufacturers or via our charging system, which can keep the upfront costs down. (see here for the commercial options)
If you make this software available to the open group, and subject to the licence agreement, you can earn money if it is used by anyone else as explained elsewhere.  Fundamentally we are happy to mount anything as long as (a) it works and does something ethical and useful and (b) a reasonable business case can be made.  It doesn't have to be statistical software.

36 Software: What linkable libraries do you have? Return to top
Apart from the usual suspects - BLAS, LINPACK etc that are publicly available - we don't at the moment have any linkable packages.  The problem is how to recover the cost since some are quite expensive.  We do of course have all the standard programming languages - C, C++, Fortran, Pascal (Free and GNU) and Ada.  We may well implement other libraries as a general service and recover the cost by extra chages to users that wish to link to them (this could for example be an addition to the monthly account charge).

24/11/2004 00:02:47

37 Software: What operating system do you use? Return to top
We use Linux - currently a variety of CentOS4 Enterprise Linux with the latest security modifications and a bespoke kernel.  This is the most popular version of the most reliable operating system around.  Many Windows users don't recognise that the internet works on Unix - hence the forward slashes rather than backward slash in all web pages.  Linux is solid and well crafted and we expect servers to stay up for months - even years - without rebooting.  Of course there will be occasions when we have to reboot the operating system when there are hardware or software kernel changed but these won't be too often we hope.  Our servers have hot-swap devices, dual power supplies, redundant memory etc so hopefully this shouldn’t be too frequent.

05/05/2005 13:00:35

38 Software: What clustering mechanism do you use? Return to top
The initial implementation of the Statistics Server runs on a dual processor Xeon system but clustered servers will become essential.  Most clustering software is commercial and quite expensive and directs the individual processes to one server or another, which is fine for web serving.  However some applications may require quite intensive computing and we are planning to use the (openMosix) system which has it's own pre-emptive migration system.  We are also considering accessing to a Grid computer facility and making that available on the same Pay as you Go basis.

05/05/2005 13:01:04

39 Software: Do you run a web server and can I use it? Return to top
We do run a web server and, for a small fee, we will be able to provide hosting and redirection facilities - that is setting up a virtual host for you and providing entries in our domain name server.  In fact, considering the overall costs, we can offer very inexpensive website hosting for multiple web sites connected to a very fast internet facility.  The main problem with this is the security issues so we will place your version of Apache within a sandbox, which also allows us to monitor the use properly.

40 Accounts: What is a family and how is it managed? Return to top
Not to be confused with a Unix group, a family is where one or more users has their total usage paid from one pot. In fact a standard user is just a special case.

You can generate a number of accounts ab initio when you register but in addiition, the family manager or administrator (these terms are used interchangeably on this site) can add other users, create groups, join internal (ie within family) or external users to a group, apply for access to the software products available etc etc. This gives institutions or clustered working partnerships the economies of scale.

The family manager is the web user who has access to the Server Administration Area. Only he or she receives the monthly account and it is then their decision on how to process it.

Note that all administrative functions are carried out from the web site, not the Unix user but the family manager can insert files into the family directory and customise all logins by a .bashrc file that will be run by all users at login time.  All user directories are owned by the individual users (ie familyname.usersuffix) and are in the family group.  All group directories are owned by the family administrator and are also in the family group.

23/03/2005 15:16:22

41 Accounts: How do I create a user? Return to top
To create a user you have to go via the web site and registration page for the Server Account under Adminstration.   You need to be registered on this web site as user administration is carried out via the site.   The system will ask you to set up another password - and we suggest that this is not the same as your general password.   You then set up the family by paying a small registration charge which gives you one Unix user on the server.   You can buy units, more users, set up groups, control access etc all from this Server Administration Area.

Remember that the Server account users and passwords have nothing to do with the Web account or Server Administration and although you set up these passwords yourself, they will be date stamped so you must change it as soon as you log in.   You are required to change your Unix account passwords regularly anyway.   If you forget your Unix password, we cannot email it to you since we will not decrypt it from the password file (we use a strong password philosophy).   We can of course reset it for you to another new password, which again you must reset once you log in for the first time.

02/03/2005 15:43:01

42 Accounts: What is a group and how do I create them? Return to top
Unix files (and directories) all have the concept of owner, group and world.  Any of these may be given read, write or execute privileges.  Under our system, a user will automatically belong to the family group - and so will have some access to all other members of the family - but the manager can also define new groups and allocate membership to those groups, including unix users external to the family.

As with other administrative changes, only the family manager can do this via this web site.

A group enables you to be able to share data around.  The data is still owned by one of the users - to whom the space is charged (although that is paid for from the family pot of course) - but according to the settings other users can read, write or execute files.  The accounting means that the running cost and bandwidth will still be charged to the user that runs the program - which is of course charged to the family acount.

02/03/2005 21:45:01

43 Accounts: Can I access other users in my family? Return to top
The structure and default permissions used mean that, in principle you can see the other users in your family but you cannot see any users outside your family.  You cannot see other families, let alone the users in other families.  Of course this means that other users in your family can see you but external users cannot see any of your family details - not even the directory.  One of the users in each family - generally the first to register - is designated as the family administrator and owns the family directory.  The default group access to your directory allows read, execute only.  The family administrator can alter this and can ensure that any directories or files that you create can have different access.

02/03/2005 21:43:47

44 Accounts: Can a family mirror the departments in my company? Return to top
At the moment, we are only providing simple family accounts that 'contain' multiple users.  You can get a departmental effect by setting up a number of families of course.  Individual users in other departments can then be granted access by the family (ie departmental) administrator.  In principle, if there is a demand, it would be possible to provide a departmental facility but it has not been done at the moment.

02/03/2005 21:49:52

45 Accounts: How much consumption and space do I get to start with? Return to top
To start with we make you an allowance on registration and setup of £25-worth of units (unless you purchase more) and 50 megabytes of space. (The allowances are specified when you register - these values may change and although we will update this FAQ, the number you get will be the number stated at registration). As trust build up (generally by consumption) you will get more but you can always ask if your present allowance is not sufficient.

24/11/2004 15:11:34

46 Accounts: What if I need more consumption or space? Return to top
Consumption is easy - just pay for some more.  As far as space is concerned, we set a sensible quota on your Unix account to avoid disasters - to your account and also to our space although we have plenty of disk space.  You only pay for what you use but if you feel you need more space just drop an email to us and we will increase the allowance.  There is also the trust level that increases the amount of space that you may use.  Remember that there are a number of files in /tmp that are also charged to you so you may just need to ensure that your directory there is kept clean.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

47 Accounts: What is a trust level? Return to top
A trust level is a system that semi-automatically gives you more access to the system as we begin to trust you. These are the levels defined so far:
  1. A restricted shell only for those that have become overdrawn and/or abused the system,
  2. Initial level that allows you a single login per user, some restriction to the amount of space, computing time per process and computational power, access to compilers and to open source software,
  3. Unrestricted logins and rather more space and power,
  4. Limited access to commercial software subject to any support agreement,
  5. Full access to commercial software subject to any support agreement,
  6. Allows programs to migrate over the cluster when it becomes available,
  7. Batch access to a grid facility when it becomes available,
  8. Interactive access to a grid facility when it becomes available,
  9. Both process migration over the cluster and batch access to a grid facility,
  10. Both process migration over the cluster and interactive access to a grid facility,
  11. and upwards have yet to be defined.

Note that software run under batch and over the cluster/grid will attract a discount so it will be worth getting to these levels once these facilities are available. Trust 4 and above really depend on the amount of money you spend and, where it is with a family account, the privilege will be given to all users in the family but may similarly be withdrawn if any one of the users abuses the system.

Note also that access to some software and facilities will require us to know who and where you are for legal reasons. There are formal restrictions on what hardware and sofware can be used for so we need to have some identity verification.

03/12/2004 12:24:56

48 Accounts: How do I change trust level? Return to top
Partly this is automatic as long as your account is run correctly.  The initial registration at Level 1 will proceed automatically in a short time to Level 2.  To achieve Level 3 and above you must have paid for some time (other than the initial free period).  The more you use (actually, the more you pay for), the higher level you will achieve.  These trust levels can also be changed by manual intervention but the aim is to have as little hands-on control as possible.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

49 Accounts: I want to connect from my Symbian/PS2 or whatever Return to top
Check the NX download site - there are a number of clients for experimental systems that will communicate effectively. We haven't tried them all of course.

02/03/2005 21:50:27

50 Costs: How is consumption charged? Return to top
Consumption is charged by six mechanisms:
  1. a monthly charge
  2. the background computing time
  3. any program-specific computing time
  4. IO and memory used for different programs
  5. the disk space used and
  6. the internet bandwidth used.

These are all linked to your family account and the group (not the user) under which the program is being run and of course the program itself.

Initially only the monthly charge will be applied but eventually the two process accounting systems will be used to measure both background accounting and the use of particular programs.  The background charge is in case a user tries to avoid paying for expensive programs so don't try and solve your problems using a bash script or it will cost a fortune!  On the other hand, you are free to create bespoke programs - we have implementations of most computing languages.

Some programs have a specific charging rate for the time and memory used so that we can either recover the licence cost or more likely pass this on to the software owner - this all depends on the arrangements we have.  In some cases, you will be charged directly by the software owner.  Some programs also have a support requirement where your user needs to be specifically enabled with an individual agreement with the software producer.  Depending on the software, this will either be handled directly by the software owner or charged via our billing system.

All these are put together so that your bill can be prepared and sent to you.  This will be done on a monthly basis and includes all instances that we have of the various programs you have used and their associated charges in terms of our units.

24/11/2004 15:27:43

51 Costs: How are payments made? Return to top
The system runs by generating an account which you can top up from time to time as required. When your account runs low (below 10 units) you are sent an email reminding you of this and if it goes overdrawn you will not be able to log in until some money have been paid. The payments are either via credit card or company invoice and the units will not be credited to your account until the money has been authorised by the banking system (so credit cards are immediate but interbank transfers and company cheques will have to clear). Trusted customers may be allowed some overdraft facility pending clearance. Some (larger) companies will be allowed an account with effective drawing facilities but we will record and charge interest payments on all invoices that are not paid within 30 days, which we consider to be a sensible working time to settle debts.

26/05/2005 18:50:54

52 Costs: What about refunds? Return to top
You have a right to cancel within 7 days and to receive a full refund.  This must be contingent on you not having used the system for any substantive work.  If you have made substantive use of the system, particularly if we have incurred any charges on your behalf, we will net these costs before refunds are issued.  We will also refund two days charges for every day that the system is not available for reasons at our end but of course we cannot be held responsible if there are network faults beyond our server and in particular with your Internet conncection.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

53 Costs: What currencies can I pay in? Return to top
You can pay in either £ $ or € (GBP, USD or EUR). There are no costs to you of doing this at all. There is a minimum charge for consumption set at £50 or equivalent and a minimum number of user accounts (above the initial inclusive account) of 4, for which each is charged at £5 or equivalent to set up. At the time of writing there are no consumption charges made but there is a monthly charge per account of £2.50 or equivalent.

Translating into the overnight spot price, we are able to tell you immediately how many units you will get, which gives you the best deal particularly as it saves all bank charges. The exchange rate given is the geometric mean of the buy and sell rates that WorldPay charge us. Some products - particularly downloadable software - may require settlement in a particular currency but otherwise you will have the opportunity to select a currency at the time of purchase. Other currencies will be charged via your credit card in £ in the usual way. We will keep this under continuous review and should it become clear that there is a substantial customer base in other currencies, we will add that currency to our list. We are keenly aware that currency exchange costs - particularly via credit cards - can exceed currency fluctuations.

Note that EU users will have VAT added unless they can furnish a valid VAT (TVA, IVA etc) number. We will check this with the europa.eu.int website and if the number does not correspond we will email you and treat any payment as inclusive of (UK) VAT, reducing the account balance appropriately, while the situation is being clarified. The current UK rate of 17.5% will be applied to all UK residents and businesses and all EU residents and businesses that are not registered. Since July 1st 2003 the place of supply for electronically delivered services is in the user's country (there are a lot of definitions but that is the usual interpretation) but charged at the UK rate.

04/04/2005 10:02:03

54 Costs: Do I have to use a credit card? Return to top
No - you can pay by cheque or interbank transfer if you like but the facilities will not be made available until the payment has been received. The fastest way for a company to use the system is therefore for a credit card to be used to open the account, then immediately buy some more time on a company invoice. This will be emailed to the customer and when we receive the cleared funds we can activate the additional units purchased. The comments about VAT above also apply. For larger companies we can set up an account payment system - which is essentially an overdraft facility - but we will expect payment to be made within 30 days and will charge interest from the original date on those payments that are overdue. In extreme circumstances we reserver the right to cancel accounts where the bill has not been paid.

26/05/2005 18:51:52

55 Costs: Why is there a set-up charge? Return to top
While we would love to be able to offer this service for free but we have to make a small charge to set up the user.  For a single user account, this is £20 plus VAT that includes the first user and you will get £25-worth of units to help you.  Sometimes there are discounts available which may be time-limited and linked to your email address - you will see a Discount box if and only if there is a valid code available to you.  You can of course at the same time purchase more units if you know you are going to use them.  Remember you cannot use any commercial software on the initial free allowance.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

56 Costs: What happens if I go overdrawn? Return to top
By default we do not allow overdraft facilities - that is you need to have your account in credit. However we do have the concept of soft and hard overdraft limits for your units consumption - you can in principle use the system up to a soft overdraft limit at a daily interest rate of 0.25% and up to a hard overdraft limit at a daily interest rate of 0.5%. You will be warned both when there is an overdraft situation and when you exceed you limit. This might be caused by one user in your family running very expensive jobs or using a lot of bandwidth for example.

Overdrafts are generally arranged for a short period of time pending the clearance of funds and are at our discretion. If your account exceeds the hard limit, you will not be allowed to log in until this overdraft is reduced below the hard limit. Note that the balance as reported via this web site and that is checked at login time is from calculations done every night so it is as well to keep the account in sufficient balance for a day's operations. We have a command that can be used by the family administrator to give an up-to-date estimate of the time used but this will not include all aspects of the consumption.

In addition to these limits, you can subject to our agreement have an account which is essentially a additional 0% overdraft facility that is cleared each month. If your main facility becomes overdrawn, in order to minimise costs we will draw resources from your credit account facility subject to the minimum numbers of units that is pre-set. The overdraft rate applied to a credit account facility once the line of credit has been exhausted will be more onerous than banking overdrafts to persuade you to settle the account promptly.

18/04/2005 10:55:09

57 Costs: Can we have multiple user accounts? Return to top
Yes you can - see the family account system above - although we do not at Trust Level 2 and above limit the number of logins to a single account once you are established. This can be set on the setup control panel and anyway you just pay for consumption. If you want multiple accounts then the setup charges are simply £5 per account plus the monthly charge. All users within one account will be set up under the family group.

12/04/2005 12:04:17

58 Costs: What about a credit account facility? Return to top
Subject to status (as they always say), we can set up an account - you cannot do this yourself of course. Status means (a) we will do a credit check which will take a little while and (b) we believe - or already know - that you will be a substantial customer. It will be much quicker to initiate the account using a credit card pending the account status.

An account is effectively a separate zero-cost overdraft facility that we will bill every month - a facility from which you can transfer resources as you need. The monthly bill is for what has been requested - if you have not used the facilities they are left as a credit much as if you had paid by credit card or cheque.

We expect the bill to be settled with 30 days, which is the recommendation for dealing with small businesses from the Confederation of British Industry. Some larger businesses may find this difficult but we don't see why prompt payers should subsidise inefficiency - or procrastination to protect cash-flow. We see no reason at all why a payment cannot be scheduled within in a properly run finance department.

If the bill is not settled within that time, the corresponding overdraft rate will apply from the day 1 on the whole invoice and if it is not settled within 60 days, all users will be locked until it is settled and account facilities may be withdrawn. Note that these are automatic procedures coded into the accounting system. Interest charges will be added to the account even if there is credit in units or users. Apart from the case of late payment, overdrafts will be charged from the date when the excess first occurred.

16/04/2005 18:10:40

59 Costs: Where should I send the payments? Return to top
Cheques should be sent to:

INDUSTRIAL-STATISTICS.COM Accounts
Quantex Research Ltd
PO BOX 473
Manchester
M14 0ED
United Kingdom.

They need to include a copy of the invoice that may be printed off from the web site and be in the currency of that invoice.

Money can also be sent by inter-bank transfer to one of the following account numbers:

Account name Quantex Research Ltd

Bank National Westminster Bank plc
Bank address 23 Stamford New Road
Altrincham
Cheshire
WA14 1DB
United Kingdom

SWIFT BIC NWBK GB 2L

IBAN Sterling GB68 NWBK 5161 1112 6740 01
IBAN Euros GB28 NWBK 6072 0273 5034 52
IBAN US Dollars GB41 NWBK 6073 0173 5034 44

as appropriate.

Please set the invoice number as the message.

Note that we expect to receive the money exactly as in the invoice so you will need to indicate that all the bank charges will be paid by you. This is because, unlike credit cards, we have some checking to do that takes time, It may be cheaper for you to pay by credit card but we do not take credit card payments to settle monthly accounts - account holders will already have had a credit period that can be as much as 60 days from the initial charge.

13/04/2007 13:20:16

60 Costs: Can I change the accounting date? Return to top
No - we have hard-wired in the accounting date so that we can see where we are.  All accounts are sent out on the 3rd of the month for the immediately preceeding month.  You only need to pay anything if the account is low or overdrawn.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

61 Costs: Why are there no academic discounts? Return to top
Academic discounts are not available as the cost has already been kept to a minimum - in fact academics are probably in breach of licence conditions if they use academically licenced software for external consultancy work. Students should be using their college or school facilities and while universities are by no means rich, they are no poorer than many tiny companies. The software we install is licenced for commercial work - although we welcome academics using the system if their IT departments can't install a particular piece of software or their department is able to save money by using our services. They can of course register a family account as detailed elsewhere and have a number of users.

12/04/2005 12:07:22

62 Costs: What about promotional and other discounts? Return to top
From time to time, we will give discounts for various services. The amount of discount will depend on the service - for example we may give a 20% discount on registration or basic consumption but if we are working on a small markup, we will only be able to give a small discount - which may be approximately 20% of our markup.

07/08/2005 19:58:24

63 Costs: How do these discounts work? Return to top
You will be sent a code which we will store against your email address along with a number of other details. When you purchase a service, the system will recognise your email address - which you must have validated - and if the discount has not expired, it will display a box for you to enter the code. Depending on the type of discount, this will either be immediately expired on use or it will expire at a given date.

07/08/2005 20:56:33

64 Costs: I don't see a box or the code is not accepted - why? Return to top
You will not see a box if the code has expired or your contact email address is not the same as the email address against which the code has been stored. If the code is not accepted, check the case - it is case sensitive. If there is still a difficulty - or you have changed and verified your contact email address - let us know and we will alter the record appropriately if you are qualified for the discount.

07/08/2005 20:03:45

65 Security: What about security? Return to top
We use four levels of security:
  1. Unix security is often criticised but by adopting a suitable directory architecture and permissions, proper control may be exercised - many Unix systems are installed without this consideration.  The standard Unix Discretionary Access Control thus enables basic control of the user files.  As the family administrator owns the family directory, s/he can easily change these levels and can install a family-wide .bashrc file if required that can set a suitable umask.
  2. Additional access both to users within the family and to external users can be controlled by group membership and corresponding access controls - again part of standard Unix DAC.
  3. Access control outside user or group level or of different restrictions within these levels can be augmented by using POSIX ACLs and the commands getfacl and setfacl enable setting of very fine grained controls on a user-by-user basis.
  4. Finally to protect the system, we use the grsecurity2 patches - in fact we are a sponsor of grsecurity.  This means that from a sysadmin point of view we can control who uses what and from a user point of view, only certain parts of the system are visible.  This system uses role-based ACLs and locks out unnecesary visibility of the system completely.

No computer system can guarantee security although we make every effort to install the latest patches.  Of course you must specifically permit other users to access your data - if you have sensitive information then please anonymise it if at all possible.  We change passwords regularly and apply all proper sysadmin routines to reduce to a minimum security risk.  Any user found abusing the system in any way will have their account suspended while investigation takes place.

In addition, for low Trust levels and also for some programs that cannot be run within grsecurity because they violate some of the standards, we will execute everything within a sandbox.  This means that you actually run your own kernel which protects the memory.

02/03/2005 16:14:20

66 Security: What about immediate backups and how do I restore any files? Return to top
We have a snapshot facility that copies files where changed every hour. This is part of the standard service. We keep hourly copies and copies back for three days that are immediately available. Restoration can be done by the user. There is a file called .snapshots in the family directory that contains links hourly.0 etc and daily.0 etc directories, under which are all the users in the family. The most recent is always the .0 version. All the permissions - and POSIX ACLs - should be the same. Therefore it is possible to erase a backed up file so beware. It is in your hands although erasing the most recent copy should still leave you with older copies even if they are unchanged.

08/05/2005 18:07:03

67 Security: When are backups done? Return to top
Hourly backups are done on the hour and daily backups are done at 3am UTC. It depends on your local time when this is. Note that the server does not have any daylight savings - all times on the server are UTC.

08/05/2005 18:02:30

68 Security: My backups are in red and I can't access them - why? Return to top
When your user is set up, the backup in ../.snapshots/hourly.x/username will initially be links to non-existing files and these will be shown by ls ../.snapshots/hourly.0 etc as red. Once the backup system has worked through, all the links should be light blue. There should be a link to lasthour, yesterday and then a directory of links called previous. If any of your links are in red after 72 hours, please let us know.

08/05/2005 18:05:39

69 Security: What about long history backups? Return to top
We will also be carrying out incremental backups using encryption and compression of all files newly created or updated but only files or directories that you specify in a ".backups" file in your family directory. This is therefore under the control of the family administrator but s/he may enable individual users to include their data automatically.

The charges are available on request and are very reasonable - we have seen commercial systems that charge over 10 times our charges with the only 'benefit' of you being able to do it from your desktop machine. We regard that as a possible security threat in itself to allow automatic access.

We use the robotic tape backup system at Manchester University - there are no bandwidth costs involved other than that used to upload any file onto the system but we charge per Gb-year. Note that this is entirely under the user control - by default we do not back up any user files at all to tape.

05/05/2005 12:47:59

70 Security: What about physical security? Return to top
The facility has extensive controls for fire and access as well as backup power supplies with 7 days of fuel etc.  You can see for yourself at Internet Facilitators.  This is part of the commercial arm of Manchester University, one of the leading universities in the UK, particularly noted for it's expertise in computing.

02/03/2005 16:20:34

71 Security: What about disk security? Return to top
We use both journaling filestore systems (SGI's XFS on the user directories) and RAID mounted SCSI disks so these are pretty rocket-proof.  The management system will email us immediately it senses any faults on the system and we are physically only a short ride to the server.

02/03/2005 16:19:17

72 Security: What about firewall security to stop someone snooping on my data? Return to top
We have a hardware firewall that ensures that you don't have direct access to the production servers.  This means that we can apply patches and updates to the firewall without taking the main system down.  The firewall is really to guard the system against being hacked or DoS attacks rather than guarding your individual data.  The server itself also runs a firewall and this will monitor attempted logins and things and take appropriate action if found.  As said elsewhere, consider anonymising information or encrypting it if it is particularly sensitive or maybe this service just isn't for you.  No security is perfect.

73 Connection: How do I connect to the Statistics Server? Return to top
First you need to set upa family account name and at least one user - which is usually taken as your family administration user.  This is done via this site by going to the Server tab on the left which is visible if you are logged in.  This will lead you through the administration and payment process.  You can then connect directly at unix.statistics-server.net using ssh2 or a client - see the FAQs below.  Remember, to do anything to your account like set up extra users, groups or pay you have to go via this site.

74 Connection: What connection technologies do you support? Return to top
Any connection technology depends on the client-side software but we support secure shell access methods (ssh2) as well as NX which has specific clients for Windows and various Unixes as well as Mac and various specialist machines.  We do not run an X-server for security reasons although we have the appropriate libraries mounted.  We are considering GoGlobal but their Linux client still has some issues.  NX comes as part of the bundle and we have put the main Windows client software up in our free download section - clients for other systems are better grabbed from the NX site as they are more platform specific.

75 Connection: I work on a Windows PC - what do you advise? Return to top
Although you may choose to install the cygwin system or ssh/sftp via putty (telnet is not allowed), we advise using the NX system that we have licenced. The client software is available in our Downloads section or from here.   You do not normally need the extra font packages for Windows that are on the NX site - these are mainly for legacy Unix programs that do not include the correct fonts.  Note that for security reasons we do not enable a window manager like KDE or Gnome - you are restricted to xterms and any graphical display will be on your Windows desktop.

76 Connection: I work on a Mac - what do you advise? Return to top
If you are using MacOSX, you are of course already running Unix under the cover.   There are X-Windows interfaces available (or you can ditch Acqua if you want).  However the easiest way is to download an NX client for Mac - you have to select the version.  If you are using legacy MacOS9 or before, we cannot help you but do suggest that you upgrade to the more robust MacOSX as soon as possible.

77 Connection: I work on a Unix system - what do you advise? Return to top
Lucky you - just ssh in.  Please use ssh2 (by specifying -2 if it is not default) and we suggest you use compression with a -C flag.  So a login may be ssh -2 -C yourfamily.yourusersuffix@unix.statistics-server.net.  Using ssh2 means that any X-display is tunnelled via the ssh connection and there is no need to open other ports on your own firewall.  For Solaris, you may use the appropriate client for NX - it is faster than ssh -C.

78 Connection: What other platforms can I use at my end? Return to top
Things are always changing but if you are using a Sony PlayStation 2, HP/Compaq iPAQ or Sharp Zaurus 5XXX you may be in luck. Check the NX web site experimental page.

79 Connection: What settings do I use in the NX wizard? Return to top
When you first use NX, a connection wizard will be started. The overall procedure is:
  1. You need to set a session name - this can be anything you want.
  2. The host you connect to is unix.statistics-server.net on port 22.
  3. Set the internet connection type as appropriate.
  4. The NX client service you want is Unix - the Windows and VNC drop downs refer to connection using Windows Terminal Service and VNC (Virtual Network Computing).
  5. Set the next box to Custom as we don't run KDE, Gnome or CDE.
  6. Click the Setting box and enter the word xterm under "Run the following command".
  7. Click on Floating window and leave the Disable taint alone.
  8. Click OK to return to the wizard.
  9. Check the Enable SSL encryption of all traffic box.
  10. It is worth saving your password and making an icon on your desktop if your machine is secure.

80 Connection: I get an Authorisation Failure message from my NX client - what should I do? Return to top
There are a number of things that may have happened here - check the FAQs and articles on the NX site. However one that we have come across ourselves is easily fixed and this will solve a number of problems - uninstall it and reinstall, checking that the .nx directory in your user has been deleted or at least cleared. This will force the wizard to be invoked and will link to the server and download a new copy of the public part of the ssh keypair.

81 Connection: What about connection using a browser? Return to top
In some ways, a browser connection is ideal but most clients are Java-based and there are problems - Java version control, speed on slower clients, having to download the JRE at least, Java security model changed.

However, there is now an experimental NX native client plugin for Mozilla and Firefox on Linux and Windows called moznx that you can try.  This can be found at home.nc.rr.com/moznx. Instructions are on that site and we have installed the appropriate software. To connect, go to unix.statistics-server.net/cgi-bin/connect.pl. Let us know how you get on.

25/03/2005 11:38:37

82 Connection: What about port numbers? Return to top
ssh and sftp use the standard protocols and NX communicates on port 22 as well.  In principle if you are behind a firewall, you do not need any incoming ports open at all to link to the statistics server as all X graphical traffic is tunnelled back through port 22.  If you are using ssh1 then you will need to open specific ports in the range 6000 and above.

23/03/2005 15:08:09

83 Connection: Why can't I see the X-Windows screen after exporting my DISPLAY variable? Return to top
You don't need to export anything for ssh2 and there should be no problem - just have a little patience as your connection may be quite slow.  If you are using ssh1, this may well be because you have a firewall installed on your system (which you should have anyway, particularly if you are working via a fixed IP and broadband).  You will need to open port 6000 (plus any offset - 6000 corresponds to :0) to tcp traffic.

24/11/2004 15:55:15

84 Connection: What about Windows software? Return to top
We will be setting up Windows-based service, to which you can connect not only from Windows but also Linux. We will post notices as facilities become available.

14/06/2005 10:21:56

85 Connection: Do you have batch processing facilities? Return to top
Batch facilities are available to users at Trust 4 and above.

24/11/2004 00:02:47

86 Connection: How do I print? Return to top
NX enables you to print locally and standard Unix connections can print directly to your own printer of course. We use the CUPS print system.

04/04/2005 10:36:17

87 Connection: Do I get another email address? Return to top
No you don't in principle because we don't want our system to be abused.  If you need to move data into your system, you should use sftp.  We will make email out available to certain classes of user but even then we will insert a small delay in each email to stop our system from being used as a source of unwanted emails.   Email in is not permitted.
